  • Program Note:

I am so happy to write this new piece of work for my dear friend and colleague, Jonathan Brennand. We have known each other now for over a decade and it has been inspiring for me to watch Jonathan’s work grow markedly over time, especially in the way he has built the program at the Worcester Youth Orchestras from its smallest seeds to the remarkable organization it is today. The chance to write a work for his wonderful young musicians combined with the singers at his church in Arlington was one I relished!

Be With Us Now is an original hymn, with a text and tune of my creation. The tune is simple and catchy enough—designed for ease of memory for congregational song—and the text is also my original work, inspired by the texts Jonathan provided for me from First Parish UU’s mission and benediction. Together, they echo the sentiment of the divine in each of us, joining as one to walk a journey through life with all of its trials and joys.

I dedicate this work fondly to my friend, Jonathan, without whom it would not exist, and he dedicates it also in turn to Carl Schlaikjer (1940-2018). May its song and sentiment resound well for all who hear it.

  • Text:

Text by the composer and adapted from the Mission and Benediction of First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Arlington, Massachusetts:

Observe the sacred in us now,
A wish for love which we endow.
Path of mercy, path of kindness,
Light the way, here, in our blindness:
         Be with us now,
         Live with us now,
And in all the days to come.

For with acceptance, faith, and life,
We are a home against the strife.
Home on earth and hope for heaven,
Come and share the bread unleaven'd:
         Be with us now,
         Live with us now,
And in all the days to come.

Throughout our journey and our climb,
And the injustice of our time,
    We choose love in one another;
    We choose neighbor, sister, brother:
         Be with us now,
         Live with us now,
And in all the days to come.
