  • Program Note:

The Cap and Bells is a playful narrative tale about the courting of a young maiden by a jester. Set in a folk melody style, the vocal parts intermingle with the flute, percussion, and piano to create an air of medieval play. Yeats' text is poignant, drawing upon the noble and naive sacrifice of the jester to win over the maiden's heart.

The work was commissioned by the Commonwealth Youthchoirs for the Keystone State Boychoir and the Pennsylvania Girlchoir, and was premiered at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on June 6, 2010.
