  • Program Note:

I Can Change the World was written for my dear friend D. Jason Bishop, in celebration of the singers of the Texas Boys Choir. Jason had an ingenious idea: ask the young members to respond to the question: “What does it mean to be a boy?” When they did so at their August 2018 retreat, he then sent me the 50+ notecards with their responses and I crafted a new poem based upon their words. I am happy to say that something from every boy is represented in the ultimate poetic text of this work. It’s a beautiful process and one that I am honored to have partaken in with them.

The music itself is driving, rhythmic, and uplifting. It’s pulsations and lyricism are filled with optimism, and I am delighted to dedicate the work to Jason and to his wonderful young inspirations. I hope the music brings them joy.

    What does it mean...?

    To have a wild imagination.
To have the best experiences ever.
    To take responsibility.
    To have a child-like heart.
    To have holy, strong words.
To have youthful bliss, a sense of discovery.
To have a long journey ahead.
To have a friend to help you up.
To be in love... a lot.

It's not just about who we are. It’s also about how we act.

    What does it mean...?

To love to build and express.
To evoke emotions with our voices.
To care for the things we like.
To hold onto peoples' expectations of us.
To be looked at with society's eyes, not open eyes.
To dream and believe in things, and make them happen.
To get to have more rowdiness in our lives.
    To have fun… a lot.

    What does it mean...?

No raindrop thinks it caused a flood.
No flame thinks it made a forest fire.

    Respecting becomes big things.

We are strong, independent, and courageous
We are respectful and kind to all people.
    We are important.
    We are adventurous.
We are gentle. We are caring.
    We are an in-between.
    We are proud.
    We are different.

We are the same, and we are just on our way to wisdom.

    What does it mean...?

No matter the color of your skin, the shape of your body, or who you love...
we will always be there to love each other.

    I am still learning.
I am not the best or the worst.
I have not yet lived up to my full potential.
I am a piece of chocolate in the sun,
and I will only last for a little while.
I am myself, and nobody can change that.
But I can change the world.
