composer's note
The Sussex Carol is a joyous holiday anthem of celebration and expectation, setting the tune made famous by Ralph Vaughan Williams in his Fantasia on Christmas Carols (1912). It is commissioned by and dedicated to the singers of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (Amy Hughley: Associate Artistic Director and Joshua Pedde: Artistic Director), and I have written gratefully with their particular spirit, zest, and sense of revelry in mind. May it bring the Christmas spirit to all who hear it!
- Dominick DiOrio, July 2023

The Sussex Carol Attributed to Bishop Luke Waddinge (1628- ca. 1691), Bishop of Ferns, Ireland A Smale Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (Ghent, 1684); Adapted by the composer.
-
On Christmas night all people sing To hear the news the angels bring. News of great joy news of great mirth News of our merciful King's birth.
-
Then why should men on earth be sad Since our Redeemer made us glad. When from our sin he set us free All for to gain our liberty.
-
When sin departs before his grace Then life and health come in its place Angels and men with joy may sing All for to see the newborn King.
-
All out of darkness we have light Which made the angels sing this night: Glory to God and peace to men Both now and evermore, Amen.
