program note

Anthem was written for the Ithaca College Trombone Troupe and is based on one of my a cappella anthems, I give you a new commandment.

Unlike the original anthem, the work has been reconceived in an antiphonal arrangement for two distinct choirs. I have always found the warm, lyrical sound of the trombone to be so evocative of the human voice and akin to the sound of a great mens chorus. This work is dedicated fondly to Hal Reynolds for inspiring me to transcribe the work for trombones.
