BEYOND THE BINARY
Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia - Dominick DiOrio
The Fillmore - Fishtown - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
7:00 pm
"There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy..."
A new major world premiere composed by Andrea Clearfield with libretto by Ellen Frankel and new percussion instruments designed by David Kontak.
In a world where technology encroaches more and more on our lived experiences, Beyond the Binary explores the question of what it means to be fully human. Featuring percussion-driven instrumental rock group Square Peg Round Hole and Philadelphia-based drag performer Cookie DiOrio as “The Oracle,” and additional music of Carlos Cordero, Moira Smiley, Moses Hogan, and my original work Alleluia.
Not a typical choral concert, this multimedia experience is part film showing, part theater presentation, and part musical showcase, with a happy hour for good measure! Learn more and purchase tickets.

commission
Commissioned by the Texas Two-Year College Choral Directors Association in celebration of their 40th anniversary and composed for the 2013 Texas Two-Year College All-State Choir, Joey M. Martin, conductor.
program note
Alleluia is joyous, celebratory, and invigorating music. I wanted to explore the percussive qualities of the voice and the lyrical capabilities of the marimba. The two instruments mesh well together, and each informs the other, contributing an energetic and propulsive drive to the work.
